WAIT…. WHAT??? Dynamics 365 for Outlook aka the Outlook client is back in? It is no longer deprecated?! That’s right folks, in an unprecedented turn of events, the Outlook client is still a viable option! It is no longer on the chopping block.
Apparently due to outcry from the community and some missing functionality with its replacement the Dynamics 365 App for Outlook aka Outlook App, the Outlook client is no longer deprecated. To read the announcement from the Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Team check out their blog here .
Even though the Outlook client is back in the fold, this does not mean teams should stop their evaluation of the Outlook App. As noted in the article referenced above, the Outlook App is based on newer technology and it provides functionality that will make your team more efficient in how they are utilizing Dynamics 365. The biggest reasons we have suggested some organizations hold back going to the Outlook App is the current the lack of support for tasks, challenging contact tracking and the loss of the dynamics spreadsheet functionality (technically Excel templates can be used instead of dynamics spreadsheets but they are not quite the same).
Even though the Outlook client is back in please note you must update it before it will work with version 9. The update (184.108.40.206) must be applied to the Dynamics 365 Outlook client version 8.2.1. This is need primarily because TLS 1.2 is the required protocol for connections to Dynamics 365 version 9. TLS is a protocol that is an industry standard designed to protect the privacy of information communicated over the Internet. The previous version of the Outlook client does not support this requirement. If you are trying to connect to Dynamics CRM version 9 using your existing version 8 Outlook client (8.0, 8.1, or 8.2.1) you are likely getting this error.
So congratulations Outlook client fans, you got what you asked for, enjoy.
