The ability to tag EVERYTHING in SharePoint 2010 is one of my favorite features.

But, if you’re like me, you sometimes create a personal or enterprise tag hastily. And you know what they say about haste … you end up with typographical errors or inconsistent capitalization.

And, if you’re like me, it REALLY bugs you to see all of those inconsistencies in your terms.

Not to worry though.  Fixing you search terms in SharePoint 2010 is pretty simple – just a little bit tricky to find.  So here are the step-by-step instructions (which assume that you have appropriate permissions to make the changes):

  1. In SharePoint, click the Site Actions menu (upper left-hand corner usually) and select Site Settings.
  2. Under the Site Administration heading, click “Term store management.”
  3. Expand the System term store and then the Keywords.
  4. Navigate to any items that you would like to change.
  5. Click the item.
  6. Click it again (yes, you have to be assertive!) On the second click, the item will become editable.
  7. Enter any changes you want to make. Now go and cleanup those tags.

Impress your managers with your consistency.  Confound your co-workers by changing their terms.  Bore your friends by telling them about your crazy SharePoint hyjinks.
